T Works brings DC Comics, Warner Bros. animated characters online

The press release is a tad confusing, but the gist seems to be Warner's is throwing up a new Web site featuring many of the characters it owns where folks can watch videos, chat, game, etc.

This is what happens when they let marketing people try to communicate with the real world. See if you can puzzle it out:

In spring 2008, Warner Bros. Entertainment will launch T-Works, a brand-new
broad-appeal immersive animation experience which, for the first time ever,
brings together all of the key characters from the Studio’s core animated
properties in an expansive, rich online environment.

T-Works, which will be ad supported, also marks the first time
that all the key characters from Warner Bros. Entertainment’ s unmatched
family of animated icons, including Warner Bros. Animation, Looney Tunes,
Hanna-Barbera and DC Comics are brought together in a single site and tied
to a user rewards system.

The site offers unparalleled levels of interaction for the broadest appeal,
from watching originally produced and classic library episodes online and
playing games to customizing characters and exploring virtual worlds.
T-Works also embraces an open philosophy, giving fans tools for
self-expression and personalization in order to “brand” their digital lives
anywhere on the Web.

The grab-and-go capability enables fans to incorporate
a custom avatar into their lives, whether it’s on T-Works or utilized in the
participant’s digital world (MySpace, Facebook, etc.). Fans will be able to
forge a deeper relationship with the characters than they have ever been
able to in the past.

Warner Bros. Animation is in development with Studio 2.0, the original
programming digital production arm of the Warner Bros. Television Group, on
two projects: an untitled “Batman” shortform series and an untitled project
based on “The Wizard of Oz,” both of which will debut exclusively on T-Works
More details on these projects will be announced in the near future.

“While the focus of T-Works is our amazing collection of animated superstars
this online destination represents much more than that,” said Horn.
“T-Works presents us with a great environment and thus a great platform to
highlight many of our current projects, from feature films to
made-for-videos, consumer products, comic books and more.”

“T-Works will offer original entertainment content, social interaction and
an intimacy with our beloved and iconic characters like never before in an
environment that’s safe and appropriate for all ages,” said Lisa Judson,
President, Warner Bros. Animation. “People have literally grown up with Bugs
Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, and we’re building an
innovative, creative, cutting-edge home where people of all ages can
interact and play with our characters in a compelling entertainment
environment.”

“The animated versions of the DC heroes have been viewer favorites for years
” said Paul Levitz, President and Publisher, DC Comics. “T-Works will give
our fans new ways to connect with our characters. The DCHeroZone should be a
great new destination for our fans.”

The T-Works experience features:

• Immersive virtual worlds where users interact with each other and assume a
cartoon identity based on existing characters-- they can play, chat and
create a personal cartoon home complete with furniture, art, pets and more
from Warner Bros. Entertainment’ s animation asset library

• Video channel featuring hundreds of hours of classic Warner Bros.
Animation product as well as contemporary programs including “Looney Tunes,”
“The Flintstones” and “Batman Beyond” and original made-for-broadband
animated short-form series

• A personalization channel to serve all aspects of fans’ digital lives from
customizing social networking profiles, portable widgets, desktop
applications and more

• A games channel with over 125 games featuring never-before- seen character
match-ups

• Video Mash-Up Maker where users can create and share their own cartoon
remixes

• Sitewide reward system that gives points for all activity that the user
does both within the virtual worlds and throughout the site--points can be
redeemed for online assets as well as offline rewards

• Destination for younger users and their parents to spend time together
with age-appropriate activities based on family-friendly favorites such as
“Baby Looney Tunes,” “Krypto the Super Dog” and many more

DVD: The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones - Volume One

This 12(!)-disk set is out Oct. 23, and is available for pre-order now from Amazon.

Details:

THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES Volume One is the first of three collections of the series and is released by Lucasfilm Ltd., CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. The first 12-disc set includes seven feature-length episodes as well as 38 in-depth companion documentaries, an historical overview, an interactive game and an interactive timeline.

The 38 historical companion films are original works from the Lucasfilm documentary unit, headed by CBS News veteran David Schneider. The documentaries complement the episodes with insights from scholars, historians and luminaries from a wide range of disciplines, bringing remarkable and fresh insight into The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. They include interviews with Gen. Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, Gloria Steinem, Martin Scorsese, Barbara Boxer, James Earl Jones, Hal David and Deepak Chopra, along with some of the nation’s pre-eminent academics.

A critically acclaimed combination of adventure, romance and history, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones was shot in 35 countries and utilized the talents of the industry’s most distinguished actors, directors and writers, earning 11 Emmy Awards and 26 nominations over the course of its production. In addition, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones was the first television series to use digital production, pioneering processes that would pave the way for Lucas' own Star Wars prequels.

“Young Indiana Jones was one of the most ambitious and complex projects that had ever been attempted for television, and the result was an amazing series that showed a completely different side to Indy,” said series producer Rick McCallum, who also produced the three Star Wars prequels and the Special Editions of the original Star Wars Trilogy. “Over the years, the fan support for Young Indiana Jones has swelled, and I’m asked about it everywhere I go. So, I’m really happy that people who grew up with it can at last have it for themselves, and that a new generation will be able to discover the brilliant acting, directing, writing and storytelling that has always been the hallmark of an extraordinary venture.”

The feature-length episodes star Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints, “The Dead Zone”) as teenaged Indy and Corey Carrier (Nixon) as 9-year-old Indy. The extraordinary cast of guest stars includes Christopher Lee, Vanessa Redgrave, Max von Sydow, Anne Heche, Lukas Haas, Elizabeth Hurley, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Craig.

During its network-television run, critics described the series as intelligent, daring, well written, irreverent, and unprecedented in scope and production values. The Hollywood Reporter called the series “exciting, fun, adventurous, brilliantly made and with a story that’s simply charming.” Bill Moyers said, “These exciting tales are the way to a youngster’s imagination – and his grandfather’s, too. History’s never been told more vividly or more engagingly for the young and old alike. May Young Indy be my grandson’s companion far into the 21st Century.”

The Young Indiana Jones films also feature the work of some of the industry’s biggest names in directing and writing. Directors include Bille August (Les Miserables), Mike Newell (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire), David Hare (Strapless, screenplays for The Hours and Damage), Terry Jones (Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian), Deepa Mehta (Water), Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III), Nicholas Roeg (The Man Who Fell To Earth, Don’t Look Now), and Michael Schultz (Car Wash, TV’s Everwood). Writers include Rosemary Anne Sisson (Upstairs, Downstairs), Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Jonathan Hensleigh (Die Hard with a Vengeance).

kind turn up in Florence, Italy, when Indy and his mother meet

colorful Gypsies and ferocious Cossacks. Realizing that
there's no place like home, Indy rejoins his mom and dad and

DVD: Icons of Horror Collection - Sam Katzman (The Giant Claw / Creature with the Atom Brain / Zombies of Mora Tau / The Werewolf)

Here's details on the two-disk, four-movie collection due out. You can pre-order it now from Amazon.

Sam Katzman, the amazingly prolific and successful, if sometimes derided, producer who churned out over 200 B-movies and serials over a four-decade-plus career, finally gets a little respect via The Sam Katzman Collection, the latest entry in Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s “Icons of Horror” DVD series.

The two-disc set will be released Oct. 16th. The four features in the set are all making their DVD debut, and two have never been released in any video format.

The highlight may be THE GIANT CLAW, the infamous 1957 sci-fi thriller about a giant bird from outer space that chows down on people and planes; it stars genre veterans Jeff Morrow, Mara Corday and Morris Ankrum and is directed by Fred F. Sears.

Another fan favorite is the self-explanatory ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU (1957), also directed by Sears. It stars the 50’ Woman herself, Allison Hayes, and was written by blacklisted screenwriter Bernard Gordon (whose name has been restored for the packaging) under the name Raymond T. Marcus.

The new-to-video titles include CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN (1955), written by the legendary horror/sci-fi writer Curt Siodmak and directed by Edward L. Cahn. It stars Richard Denning in a fast-paced gangsters-meet-reanimated-corpses tale. Cahn also directed THE WEREWOLF (1956), an Atomic Age chiller about a man (Steven Ritch) who becomes the victim of a worthy scientific experiment gone horribly wrong.

Sony Pictures consultant Michael Schlesinger, who is supervising the collection, notes, “People like to make fun of Katzman’s films, but they’re generally quite well made, given their budgets and schedules, and remain entertaining today. THE WEREWOLF, in particular, generates real poignancy in Ritch’s plight; it’s not at all a standard wolfman movie. And the only thing wrong with GIANT CLAW is the hokey bird itself; had Ray Harryhausen done the effects, it would be considered a minor classic today. That Sam had the sense to hire great writers like Siodmak and Gordon proves he took these things very seriously, no matter how far-fetched their premises may be. And that goes for directors as well—Sears used a bubble machine to simulate an underwater oxygen tank in ZOMBIES; that shows a level of ingenuity many quickie filmmakers lack.”

The set also includes the original trailers for all four features, plus bonus trailers, as well as Chapter 2 of Katzman’s 1951 serial version of “Mysterious Island”, directed by the renowned Spencer Gordon Bennet. Rounding out the package are a pair of “scary” shorts: a 1959 Mr. Magoo cartoon, “Terror Faces Magoo”, and an extremely rare two-reel comedy from 1936, “Midnight Blunders”, starring Tom Kennedy and Monte Collins as a pair of bumbling detectives who cross paths with a Frankenstein-ish monster.

Why Chapter 2 and not 1? Explains Schlesinger: “The first chapter is all exposition and frankly not very exciting. I thought it would be better to get right to the action. And in any event, it opens with a recap, plus everyone already knows the story from the 1961 Harryhausen version or the Jules Verne novel.”

Born in New York City on July 7th, 1901, Katzman entered the movies in 1914 as a prop boy, and slowly worked his way up the ladder to production manager by 1933. The following year, he became a producer, a position he enjoyed until his death in 1973. (He also directed a few films in 1937). Though his pictures were almost always low-budget, he did sometimes land stars as big as Elvis Presley, Lucille Ball, Bela Lugosi, Gene Barry and Dana Andrews, as well as such music icons as Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Little Richard and Roy Orbison. And while this is the first SPHE release to bear his name, four of his early rock-‘n’-roll time capsules debuted on Sony DVDs earlier this year: ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK AND DON’T KNOCK THE ROCK, and their 1960s remakes, TWIST AROUND THE CLOCK and DON’T KNOCK THE TWIST.

THE GIANT CLAW (1957): The movie that’s literally a turkey! In an act of cosmic irony, an enormous bird from outer space descends upon the Earth and begins chowing down on people. As usual, scientists and the military must team up to save our planet. This hysterically feathered fable stars sci-fi icons Jeff Morrow (THIS ISLAND EARTH), Mara Corday (TARANTULA!), Morris Ankrum (IVADERS FROM MARS) and Robert Shayne (TV’s “The Adventures of Superman”), and is directed by Fred F. Sears (EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS).

CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN (1955): From the pen of the legendary Curt Siodmak (THE WOLF MAN, DONOVAN’S BRAIN) and director Edward L. Cahn (IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE) comes this smash-bang thriller starring Richard Denning (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) as a police doctor hot on the trail of a mob boss who’s hired an ex-Nazi scientist to re-animate his dead thugs to do more dirty work! If it seems like a condensed serial, it shouldn’t be a surprise: the cast is packed with such vets as Gregory Gaye, Tristam Coffin, Harry Lauter, Pierre Watkin, Lane Chandler, Don Harvey and Charles Horvath.

ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU (1957): Director Edward L. Cahn teams with another great writer, Bernard Gordon (using his blacklist nom de plume Raymond T. Marcus) for this delightfully loopy adventure about a sunken ship whose cargo of diamonds is guarded by its zombified crew members. And wouldn’t ya know it, there’s a bunch of foolhardy scavengers who aren’t scared of The Swimming Dead. The 50 Foot Woman herself, Allison Hayes, stars along with Gregg Palmer (FROM HELL IT CAME), Morris Ankrum (EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS), Gene Roth (ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES) and B-western star Ray “Crash” Corrigan.

THE WEREWOLF (1956): Updating a horror staple to the Atomic Age, this moody chiller stars Steven Ritch as an auto-accident survivor who’s used by two scientists as a subject for their experiments to create a vaccine for nuclear fall-out. Unfortunately, it has a rather hairy side effect. Another solid effort from director Fred F. Sears, with Don Megowan (THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US), Joyce Holden (TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5000) and Harry Lauter (IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA), as well as some beautiful locations at Big Bear Lake.

DVD: Breathless - Criterion Collection

Details on this double-disk presentation of Godard's classic French New Wave flick. It's out Oct. 23 and available for pre-order now from Amazon.

There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, crackling personalities of rising stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, and anything-goes crime narrative, Jean-Luc Godard's debut fashioned a simultaneous homage to and critique of the American film genres that influenced and rocked him as a film writer for Cahiers du cinema. Jazzy, free-form, and sexy, Breathless (A bout de souffle) helped launch the French new wave and ensured cinema would never be the same.

Special Features
- New, restored high-definition digital transfer, approved by director of photography Raoul Coutard

- Archival interviews with director Jean-Luc Godard, and actors Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, and Jean-Pierre Melville

- New video interviews with Coutard, assistant director Pierre Rissient, and filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker

- New video essays: filmmaker and critic Mark Rappaport's "Jean Seberg" and critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's "Breathless as Film Criticism"

- Chambre 12, Hotel de suede, an eighty-minute French documentary about the making of Breathless, with members of the cast and crew

- Charlotte et son Jules, a 1959 short film by Godard, starring Belmondo

- French theatrical trailer

- New and improved English subtitle translation

- PLUS: A booklet featuring writings from Godard, film historian Dudley Andrew, Francois Truffaut's original film treatment, and Godard's scenario

Time-Flight
All is not well aboard the TARDIS - in an attempt to cheer up Nyssa and Tegan after the recent death of fellow companion Adric, the Doctor plans a trip back to the year 1851 and a visit to the Great Exhibition in London. However, the journey is unexpectedly interrupted and the TARDIS mysteriously appears in Terminal 1 of Heathrow Airport in modern-day London. At the same time, a routine incoming Concorde flight disappears without a trace... Are the two events connected? A second Concorde, carrying the Doctor, his companions and the TARDIS, is dispatched to follow the same flight path as the missing aircraft in an attempt to discover the fate of the passengers. But when this Concorde arrives back at Heathrow, they discover that things are not quite what they appear to be... What sinister force is behind the kidnapping of the Concorde passengers and crew? Is an ancient malevolent power at work, or something with which the Doctor is much more familiar?

Although the invader is successfully repelled, the TARDIS is immediately recalled to Gallifrey, where the High Council of Time Lords sentence the Doctor to be executed to prevent any further attempts at bonding. It seems there is a traitor on Gallifrey. And what links the Renegade and the disappearance of Tegan's cousin in Amsterdam? Two fates intertwined must battle for the future of the entire universe...

Order The Shadow reprints.

DOC SAVAGE Volume 12: "The Squeaking Goblin" and "The Evil Gnome"
The pulp era's greatest superhero battles evil in two newly-restored novels by Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson. First, Doc Savage and his Iron Crew journey to Kentucky to investigate the mystery of a ghostly skeletal sharpshooter and his "disappearing bullets." Can they stop the mountain feud orchestrated by "The Squeaking Goblin"? Then, serial killings by a unstoppable foe set the Man of Bronze on the trail of "The Evil Gnome." This collector's item pulp reprint showcases the classic color pulp covers by Emery Clarke and Walter Baumhofer, interior illustrations by Paul Orban and historical articles by Will Murray, author of seven Doc Savage novels.

THE SHADOW Volume 13: "Six Men of Evil" & "The Devil Monsters"
"The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay. The Shadow Knows!" The Master of Darkness combats bizarre menaces in two of Walter Gibson's strangest thrillers. A torturous Aztec transformation gives "Six Men of Evil" an unexpected advantage in their criminal pursuits. Then, Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane encounter their most infamous foe--Monstodamous, master of menace--in "The Devil Monsters." This classic pulp collection also showcases George Rozen's breathtaking pulp cover, all the original interior art by illustrators Tom Lovell and Paul Orban, historical commentary by Will Murray and an article on the Golden Age Shadow Comics by Anthony Tollin.

Doctor Who taking a break before season 5

From the BBC:

After months of media speculation, BBC One can confirm that the Bafta-award winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.

Series four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in spring 2008 with a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009, Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.

The full length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved and, more importantly, for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."
