Pete Townshend to give inaugural John Peel lecture

Who guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend will give the first lecture named after legendary British deejay John Peel at the upcoming Radio Festival to be aired on BBC 6, Oct. 31.

The Who star will ask whether creativity in the music and radio industries – or "John Peelism" – can continue to thrive in a digital era where listeners expect content for free.
The keynote address... will be introduced by Peel's son, 6 Music presenter Tom Ravenscroft, alongside fellow presenters – and festival hosts – Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie.
The festival will run from 31 October to 2 November and also includes appearances by BBC director general Mark Thompson, Global Radio boss Ashley Tabor, Jamie Cullum and Ronnie Wood.
Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, said: "John Peel was one of the radio industry's original free thinkers, breaking down the barriers of music to present his take on the musical world.
"His eclectic ear for a good tune made him a favourite with his millions of listeners, musicians and the industry alike, and I'm delighted that BBC Radio 6 Music is building on John's legacy to inspire further free thinking about music and the music-related media."
