Pop focus: Jane Asher in "The Saint"

On Jan. 9, 1964, actress Jane Asher -- then dating Paul McCartney -- appeared on an episode of "The Saint" TV series.

"The Saint" series starred future James Bond actor Roger Moore in the lead role of spy Simon Templar and was based on the Leslie Charteris suspense novels. It aired first in Britain, but was picked up for U.S. broadcast by NBC starting in 1966.

The Saint character has a long history in pop culture, including comics, a series of 1940s films and a 1997 film starring Val Kilmer.

In her appearance, Asher plays the daughter of the episode's title character, "The Noble Sportsman."

An accomplished stage and screen actress, Asher appeared in the title role of "Alice in Wonderland" on British radio as a child. She was the youngest ever "Wendy" to appear in a London stage production of "Peter Pan." Also as a child, she and her brother Peter (later of the Peter and Gordon pop duo) appeared on an episode of the British "Robin Hood" TV series.

Most famously, she appeared opposite Michael Caine in 1966's hit film "Alfie."

Here are some stills from Asher's "Saint" episode, including a paperback adaptation of the story, and Jane with Paul.
