Coming Up: "The Definitive Archies" - new vinyl best of

Out Sept. 13 from Real Gone. Order now from Amazon.

Details:

The first vinyl compilation in 30 years from everybody’s favorite back-of-the-cereal-box band! And, unlike recent (and decidedly unauthorized) reissues of The Archies’ albums, this release is not a disc dub!

Brainchild of Don Kirshner, the man behind The Monkees, The Archies, for all of their “manufactured” image, were actually the result of a remarkable collection of talent. Holding down production duties was Jeff Barry, whose songwriting collaborations with then-wife Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector had yielded such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Be My Baby,” and whose previous production credits included The Shangri-Las (“Leader of the Pack”) and The Monkees.

Aiding Barry on the songwriting side was Barry discovery Andy Kim (“Rock Me Gently”), with whom Barry penned The Archies’ biggest hit, “Sugar, Sugar.” And at the mic was the great Ron Dante, whose first chart hit, ironically, was The Detergents’ “Leader of the Laundromat,” which was a parody version of “Leader of the Pack!” With such a surehanded production and songwriting team in tow, The Archies rattled off seven chart hits in quick succession, and you’ll find six of ‘em (featuring their other Top Ten hit, “Jingle Jangle”) here, in a 14-track compilation pressed in opaque blue vinyl limited to 1000 copies! Extensive sleeve notes by Ed Osborne accompany.

The Monkees meet the Archies!

Here's a comic book cover Michael Allred was born to draw: The Archies meet the Monkees!

The Riverdale rockers will meet the Pre-Fab Four in issue four of a new Archies ongoing series, which starts this month.

According to the Comic Book Reporter: "The meeting between The Archies and The Monkees will take place thanks to some good, ‘ol fashion time travel, which will allow Archie and the Riverdale gang to meet the Monkees — Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, David ‘Davy’ Jones — in their prime."

Mark Pinkus, the president of Rhino Entertainment, owns the rights to The Monkees name, logo and back catalog — which he acquired back in 1994 — and sees the inclusion of the band as a way to introduce the group to new fans. “What a great opportunity to expose a whole new audience to the classic music and antics of The Monkees,” he said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing Micky, Davy, Mike, and Peter in Riverdale!”

Allred's cover is one of a few variants for the issue (and definitely the coolest).

Pop Focus: A Stan Goldberg cover gallery

Veteran comics artist Stan Goldberg passed away earlier this week at age 82.

Best-known for his decades of work on the various Archie Comics titles, he was also the colorist on many of Marvel's early superhero books. And he teamed with writer Stan Lee for many years on Millie the Model.

Goldberg drew hundreds of covers, but hopefully the smattering below provides a good representation of the work he produced over a long career that gave joy and provided lots of laughs to generations of comics fans.

My 11-year-old daughter is a big Archie reader, so I've seen loads of Stan's work around the house over the past several years.

Goldberg retired from Archie in 2010, but his work still appears regularly in the company's various digests and reprint titles, and likely will continue to do so for many years to come.

One of Goldberg's last works, an Archie-style short scripted by Tom DeFalco and featuring Peter (Spider-Man) Parker, is set to appear in a Marvel 75th anniversary special out next month. You can see a page from it below.

Today in WTF: Archie Comics publisher has lost the plot

I mean, what the hell????
"Life With Archie" #36 hits stores on July 16, and CNN can reveal exclusively that it tells the story of how Archie sacrifices himself to save a friend.

.... Goldwater: I think it's the natural conclusion to the "Life With Archie" series.
Archie dies as he lived -- heroically. He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us -- the best of us. Our strengths and our faults.
Writer Paul Kupperberg, with input from myself, has crafted an emotional, impactful and classic story that I know will survive the test of time. This isn't a random one-off or "what-if" story that we're doing as a gag. This is the story that we mapped out carefully and with much thought. This is the death of Archie as we see it, and we're treating it with that same level of gravitas and import. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we are being very considerate about it.
CNN: What are you hoping to accomplish with this storyline?
Goldwater: First and foremost, like with anything we do at Archie, we want to tell a great, memorable story. That being said, this story in particular is of the utmost importance to us as a company and as a keeper of the Archie brand.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate for Archie to die in a comical Betty vs. Veronica tug of war in the tunnel of love?
