So long, Don Rickles

Being a Jack Kirby fan, I always think of him in this context. One of the weirdest comics ever.

  1. I'd never heard of Don Rickles before seeing him in this comic, and I probably just assumed that he was meant to be a celebrity only in the DC Universe. It was likely a couple of years after this mag that I discovered he was a real person. Have you heard the story about him and Frank Sinatra? Sinatra's having dinner in Las Vegas (or somewhere) and in walks Don and his mother. Getting his mother seated a few tables away, Rickles then comes over to Sinatra and says "Frank, my mom's a big fan of yours and it's her birthday today. It'd mean a lot to her if, in 5 minutes, you were to walk over to our table and wish my mom a happy birthday." "Sure" says Frank, and Don goes back to his table. 5 minutes later Frank walks over and says "Mrs. Rickles, I just want to wish you a very happy birthday." Don looks up at him and says "Frank, can't you see we're at our soup? It's her birthday for cryin' out loud, let the woman have her soup already, ya bum!" Or words to that effect. Rickles had set ol' blue eyes up, the rascal.
