New music I like: Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Heart Attack

Pop culture roundup: Paul McCartney - fashion icon; comic shop reality TV series; Barbarella TV series; Yoko Ono collaborates with Sonic Youth members!

What makes a man stylish? A 1969 magazing article on Paul McCartney explores.

Either geek culture is reaching its apex, or the reality trend is running out of ideas: The National Geographic channel has announced a new series focusing on comic book shop owners and denizens:

On Friday, July13th at 8pm (ET, PT) the National Geographic cable channel will present Comic Store Heroes, a one-hour reality show set in New York’s Midtown Comics.  The documentary-style show will follow the lives of staffers Gerry, Thor, and Alex as they deal with all sorts of geek and enthusiast customers while simultaneously planning their booth at the New York Comic Con.

Holy crap! Missed this video from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert. Note that Grace Jones is in her early 60s and keeps that hoop spinning through the whole song.

A Barbarella TV series may be in the works.
Gaumont International Television and producer Martha De Laurentiis are teaming with Drive director Nicolas Refn for a series that will be based on the character created by Jean-Claude Forest in a graphic novel and made famous in the 1968 sci-fi movie staring Jane Fonda as a sexpot tasked with finding and stopping the evil weapons inventor.

Yoko Ono has a new, 14-minute, single out in collaboration with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon and a full-length album is due out this fall.

Happy Pop Genius Day: Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney celebrate their 70th birthdays this week

Two brilliant songwriters who held down the bass guitar slots in their respective bands in the 1960s both turn 70 this week. Paul McCartney of the Beatles was born June 18, 1942, and Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, was born June 20.

Here's a 2002 live recording of them performing the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," which Paul always cites as a favorite song. Not the greatest recording, but it's cool to hear these guys, even briefly, together.
