War of the Worlds is 70

Orson Welles' notorious radio production of H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" was broadcast 70 years ago today, scaring the beejeezus about of all sorts of people, who though Martians were really invading Earth. If you've never heard it, you should. It's lasting testament to the combined power of radio and the human imagination. TV and movies have just never been able to top the images our minds can come up with when provided with the right words and sound effects.

You can download MP3s of the broadcast all over the Web. Or listen here.
