Proceeds from "Bill Mantlo: A Life in Comics" will help pay for the writer's ongoing care. You can learn more here.

Sad news: Gemstone is suspending publication of four of it's Disney comics series due to a rise in paper costs. Affected are Mickey Mouse and Friends, Donald Duck and Friends, Mickey Mouse Adventures and Donald Duck Adventures. Gemstone will continue publishing the "prestige"-formattted Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories, but the price of those will go up from $6.95 to $7.50.

That doesn't mean we'll be seeing less of Donald and Mickey, however:

Gemstone Publishing is moving full steam ahead with plans to make their Walt Disney Treasures an ongoing series; to introduce two new 80-page annuals; and to release several thick-but-inexpensive Shonen Jump-style black and white books per year—some specially targeted to collectors, others to all ages.

"Lost" clues: "Every Man for Himself" Ep. 4, Season 3

Synopsis:

Wise to Sawyer's plans to escape, the Others pull him from his cage and bring him to an operating theater. Sawyer awakes and sees a bandage on his chest. Benjamin tells him they've implanted a pacemaker. If Sawyer's pulse races beyond a certain point, his heart will explode. This should put a stop to any fighting with guards and planning to escape. Benjamin says the Others will perform the same operation on Kate if necessary.

Sawyer is returned to his cage and Kate questions why he's given up escaping.

Meanwhile, the Others force Jack to operate on their member Colleen, who was shot by Sun. Working in primitive conditions and doing his best, Jack is unable to save her.

Picket, Colleen's boyfriend (husband?) becomes enraged and vows to get revenge on the passengers. He beats up Sawyer in retribution but stops short of killing him.

In flashback, we see Sawyer in prison. His sentence is cut short when he informs on another prisoner. He also learns he has a baby daugher, but is determined not to become part of her life.

At episode's end, Benjamin takes Sawyer up on a rise to look over the ocean. Sawyer sees that he, Kate and Jack are being kept on a different island from the one their fellow passengers are on. He sees escape would be more difficult than he'd imagined. Benjamin tells Sawyer that the pacemaker operation was a sham to keep him in line. The Others conned the con man--the only way to earn his respect.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* Desmond sees the future again and erects a makeshift lightning rod from a golf club, which keeps Claire and Charlie from getting zapped.

* The Others say Colleen and her crew are back on the "sub." Do they really have a submarine?

* Juliet tells Jack she's a fertility expert. Does this have something to do with the Others and their weirdness with children, i.e. Claire's baby, Walt, the child passengers that were abducted? Speaking of which, where are the kids we saw last season? Are they with Benjamin's group or some other Others?

* In the operating room, Jack spies x-ray images on the wall. They show a tumor on someone's spine. Later he confronts Juliet about this. He's a spinal surgeon, so who did they bring him there to operate on? Is it Benjamin? Is this the "one thing" he asked Jack to do for him (in episode 2 this season) in exchange for freedom?

* Sawyer is seen reading "Of Mice and Men" and later quotes from the book, as does Benjamin.

* Is the Others' island Pala Island? Last season they mentioned the Pala Ferry? Could this refer to the sub? Why can't the crash survivors see this island from where they are?

* Tom, aka "Mr. Friendly," tells Benjamin "Since the sky turned purple 2 days ago, I haven't been able to re-establish the comms." Who are they communicating to? How are they blind? And is this a reference to the whiteout caused by the Hatch implosion?

"Lost" has, um, lost a fifth of its audience this season.

------------------------

This probably won't help: "Lost" will go on hiatus following the show's Nov. 8 episode, returning Feb. 7. It's nice to have these rerun-free stretches of episodes, but the show may lose momentum by taking such a long break. A new series, "Day Break," takes the show's time slot during the hiatus.

A live-action series featuring Marvel Comics' Moon Knight is planned.

Pop Culture Roundup Oct. 24, 2006

The U.S. National Security Agency thinks "Lost" and "CSI" viewers may have the right stuff.

Fans overwhelmingly responded to NSA help-wanted ads aired in the Washington-Baltimore market during the two shows this fall, the Baltimore Sun reports. NSA Human Resources Director John Taflan told the newspaper in a written statement the ads brought thousands of hits to its Web site.

It's obvious why the NSA targeted viewers of 'CSI,' the CBS franchise about forensic science, but the choice of ABC's 'Lost,' about a disparate group of plane crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island, is not as clear.

Longtime CIA officer Ron Marks told the Sun 'Lost' is a good choice because it reaches an 'audience that's interested in problem-solving and thinking differently.'

Hugo Pratt's acclaimed "Corto Maltese" comics tales will be available to U.S. readers again soon.

Heavy Metal..is releasing the initial volume in the Corto Maltese saga, Ballad of the Salt Sea ($14.95), this December. Heavily influenced by the adventure comic strips of Milton Caniff and the tough guy-with-the heart-of-gold heroes of the American cinema (think Bogart in Casablanca), Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese graphic novels chronicle the adventures of a laconic sea captain who gets involved in a fascinating series of globe-spanning yarns set in the early twentieth century.

Previous English editions of Pratt's works are selling for big bucks on Amazon and elsewhere, so this is good news to fans.

Review: "Wisdom from the Batcave: How to Live a Super, Heroic Life"

It's easy to write off superhero comics as simple wish fulfillment: They're all about adolescent power fantasies.

After all, who wouldn't want the strength to beat up people you don't like? Or the power to fly? That would be cool.

But do superhero stories offer us anything else? Do they have any deeper value besides fantasy, escapism and nostalgia?

Carey A. Friedman thinks so, and details this belief in "Wisdom from the Batcave."

Friedman is a rabbi and this book is a spiritual self-help work of sorts, but not a cheesy, gimmicky one.

Friedman takes superheroes, especially Batman, quite seriously. He takes a close look at the Batman myth and what it tells us about living a meaningful life.

Batman is the ideal character for such an exercise because, more than any other superhero, he's human. He doesn't have any particular super powers. True, he's super intelligent and very strong. And he has an incredible car. But if we use our imaginations enough, achieving what he's achieved is in some way possible. We can all work toward improving ourselves.

And that goes beyond simply doing lots of pushups. Using Batman as an example, Friedman details the importance of family (Batman's got Robin, Alfred and an assortment of other folks he relies on for support), facing adversity (Batman emerges from the tragedy of his parents' death to do something constructive in the world--fighting crime) and strong principles. And it all comes off a lot less hokey than you might think.

A former chaplain at Duke University, Friedman got the idea of using Batman in this fashion while doing "Spiritual Survival for Law Enforcement" workshops for the FBI. Those sessions drew from philosophy and different religious traditions in order to give law enforcement officers the psychic tools they need to persevere in situations that sometimes feel bleak and hopeless. But while teaching the class and thinking about his own reservoirs of strenght and inspiration, Friedman kept coming back to Batman.

No doubt many of us other grown-ups owe more than we might think to the characters who inspired as us children. In a way, that made us who we are. Or who we'd like to be. And maybe that's why many of us still have an emotional attachment--one that goes beyond mere nostaligia--to these characters today.

Published by Compass Books, "Wisdom from the Batcave" is available in bookstores or via www.batwisdom.com

It's available for pre-order now for $41.99 from Amazon.

Films included:

Charlie Chan at the Opera, 1936

Charlie Chan at the Race Track, 1936
