Yet another theme park ride becomes a movie: Disney has a "Jungle Cruise" flick in the works.

The film is "...inspired by the ride in which parkgoers travel the jungle river guided by a riverboat skipper, encountering such wild creatures as piranhas and gorillas during their tour. The ride was one of the 22 original attractions when the park opened in 1955.

The executive producers of the CW network's superhero saga "Smallville," Al Gough and Miles Millar, are in negotiations to write the script. Plot details are being kept under lock and key, but the movie will be set in the 20th century."

The multi-media "Lost Experience" event is coming to an end with an internet radio broadcast at 8 p.m. PCT Sept. 24. I confess I haven't had the time or inclination to play along with this "game" that provides added clues and storylines re: "Lost." I'm more a sit-and-watch-TV-that's-good-enough-for-me fan of the show. But I'm interested in a summary of findings. I'll pass those along, or a link to them, before the new season starts Oct. 3. "Sarah Jane Adventures" -- official news on "Doctor Who" spinoff series

From the BBC:

Multi-award winning writer Russell T Davies has written a brand new series for CBBC called The Sarah Jane Adventures. It stars one of The Doctor's most famous companions, investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith.

Russell T Davies says: "Children's TV has a fine history of fantasy thrillers - I loved them as a kid, and they were the very first things I ever wrote. So it's brilliant to return to such a vivid and imaginative area of television."

The series begins with a 60-minute special which will be broadcast in early 2007 with the series due later in the year.

Set in present-day West London, the programme stars original Sarah Jane actress Elisabeth Sladen and Yasmin Paige, who plays her 13-year-old neighbour Maria.

The two form an unlikely alliance to fight evil alien forces at work in Britain.

Elisabeth says: "I left Sarah Jane but she never left me. I can't wait to return to Cardiff to find out what's going to happen to her next."

In the special, Maria and Sarah Jane are brought together in their battle against the scheming Ms Wormwood, played by Samantha Bond.

Filming begins next month on location in Wales, with the series going into production in spring 2007.

Creative Director of CBBC, Anne Gilchrist, says: "CBBC viewers have already proved themselves to be enormous fans of Dr Who. I am thrilled that they'll now have this new series as an extra-special treat."

Sarah Jane Smith was a companion to the third and fourth Doctors, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, and was a regular in the series from 1973 to 1976.

She made a recent return in the 2006 episode School Reunion opposite David Tennant, the tenth Doctor.

Russell T Davies' hugely successful Doctor Who has a Christmas Special due this year, with a third series broadcast in Spring 2007.

The hotly-anticipated Torchwood, following the adventures of Captain Jack, begins this autumn on BBC THREE.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is written by Russell T Davies and Gareth Roberts. It was commissioned by Jane Tranter for BBC Drama, and Anne Gilchrist and Jon East for CBBC. It is produced by BBC Wales and will transmit on the CBBC Channel and CBBC on BBC ONE.

The Executive Producers are Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies. The Producer of the special is Susie Liggat and the Director is Colin Teague. The Producer of the series is Matthew Bouch and the Series Producer is Phil Collinson.

K-9, the faithful robot dog and Sarah Jane's goodbye present from The Doctor, makes an appearance in the special but will not appear in the series.

Pop Culture Roundup Sept. 20, 2006

Brian Wilson is teaming with fellow ex-Beach Boy Al Jardine for a series of "Pet Sounds" performances.

Wilson's pairing with Jardine, their first in decades, comes a week after a California judge dismissed portions of a lawsuit against the latter by former Beach Boys bandmate Mike Love. Love had sued Jardine claiming he was the only person legally allowed to perform under the name "Beach Boys" but Jardine had toured anyway with "knockoff bands" using names such as "Beach Boys Family & Friends."

Groovy Age of Horror exposes censored Marvel Essential reprints.

Bob Dylan borrows words from Confederate poet Henry Timrod on his new album, reports The New York Times.

It seems that many of the lyrics on that album, Mr. Dylan’s first No. 1 album in 30 years (down to No. 3 this week), bear some strong echoes to the poems of Timrod, a Charleston native who wrote poems about the Civil War and died in 1867 at the age of 39.

---------------------

Budget constraints will keep the next season of "Doctor Who" earthbound, the BBC reports.

"People will say, 'Why doesn't he visit alien planets more often?'" writer/producer Russell T Davies said. "But that's because they are expensive. They're hugely expensive."

Davies also told Doctor Who magazine that these episodes gained the lowest viewing figures of the series...

The writer added that he would not be using forests and quarries as stand-ins for alien landscapes, as was often the case in classic Doctor Who episodes.

"The mockery we would get walking into a forest and saying that we're on the planet Zagfon!

SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE: SLEEP OF REASON #1
Written by John Ney Rieber
Art by Eric Nguyen
Cover by Tim Bradstreet
A Vertigo classic returns — with a vengeance! The fertile mind of writer John Ney Rieber (BOOKS OF MAGIC, Captain America) and the dynamic pen of artist Eric Nguyen (Strange Girl) have created a Sandman tale that both honors the classic character and will stand as a classic in its own right.
A new age of terror demands a new Sandman to quell its nightmares. This disturbing new miniseries follows the final days of Wesley Dodds and his lifelong love Dian Belmont as they encounter a harrowing fate while traveling in Afghanistan circa 1997. Ten years later, with American troops on the ground in that country, wartime photojournalist Kieran Marshall is forced to take on the mantle of Wesley’s former alter-ego, the terrifying crimefighter known as The Sandman.
A dark and relevant tale that will appeal to new readers as well as fans of the classic Vertigo series, SLEEP OF REASON questions what it means to be human when confronted with evil. Marshall is a man in search of a career-making interview with master-terrorist Masad. When he confronts Masad face-to-face, he learns to his horror that this terrorist can teach him more about himself than he ever wanted to know. Becoming the new Sandman will be the only way Kieran can save his own life — but, possibly, at the cost of his humanity.
